What's wrong with this hydrangea?

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help me to diagnose this hydrangea?  Was beautiful when bought from a good garden centre, and I planted it in a border with fresh compost in a sunny position.  It is well watered.  Within 2 or 3 weeks it developed blue/grey discolouration of the leaves and is looking very sick indeed.  Could it be a form of mildew? Or nutritional?

Thank you!

That looks to me like powdery mildew, usually occurs on plants that are suffering from insufficient water.   Hydrangeas are very thirsty plants ... they need at least two buckets full of water every other day in this weather.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    They prefer some shade, too!

All of the above, plus plants from garden centres have often been forced in GH conditions. They can struggle with the big, bad, outside world to begin with. Hot direct sun for extended periods is not the hydrangea's friend. Morning sun, afternoon shade.
