Short sweet pea stalks

ThankthecatThankthecat Posts: 421
My sweet peas are growing well but all the stalks are very short - some no more than two inches. I gave up growing Cupani years ago because they tended to have short stalks - no good for cut flowers. This year's plants are just 'old fashioned mixed'. What am I doing wrong?

I doubt you are doing anything wrong.
My neighbour showed me a bunch that she had picked the other day - stalks were about 3"
Almost certainly down to the hot weather

Some types are more recommended for long stalks, as good for cut flowers. That might make a difference...

I'd agree with scroggin - the stems get gradually shorter through the year, so you have to adopt the different growing method described.
I love Cupani, and although the stems are shorter than many others, they're perfect for a little bud vase or simple small drinking glass  :)
They need a lot of food and water - harder this year because of weather conditions, unfortunately.

Where are you growing them in a bed or pot. I have planted the same variety (can't remember which ones) in a bed and a trough. The ones in a bed are doing amazing the stalks are 10 - 12 " long, but the ones I have in a trough aren't doing as well plus the stalks are only 3 - 4" long.

They're in a bed and get fed once a week and well watered twice a week. I've grown this mix for years and never had this problem before. They've only been flowering about three weeks :(
