Different Plants Together

Hiya, I have a few plants mainly perrenial that I was thinking of putting together in one large trough. Is this a good idea or are they best been planted in separate containers?

Thank you

Hi, what are the plants you have in mind?
  • Hiya, I have salvia, penstemon and pelargonium. Also, 2 different coloured fuchsias that are quite well established that I thought about putting together. Both pots are half barrel size

Two fuchsias will fit in half barrel,  but not the others, they grow very big, and Pelagoniums not at all because they’ll probably die over winter, being house or conservatory plants, they’re only good outside in the summer.

If you want a Salvia or a Penstemon to reach its full potential, plant them one in each.

Personally I don’t like perenials in tubs, I keep the tubs for annuals in the summer and the plant bulbs for the following Spring.
But of course, you must do what you want to do. 🙂

    Penstemon 2 to 3 ‘ across.

This Salvia, one seed one plant huge.

  • Hi Lyn,

I really appreciate your invaluable input, that is great. I am now gonna do precisely that - put 2 fuchsia's together and keep others on their own. Thank you so much.

ps. Unfortunately I only have balcony no garden hence the tubs
  • Also i will bring pelargoniums in over winter - thanks again Lyn  :)

Flowerbomb, have you thought at all about the weight problem on your balcony? Half barrels, filled with plants and then watered could be very heavy

I have mainly plastic tubs and only 2 are large but yes it is fine I have already checked with the landlord. Also it is quite a good size with a very thick concrete base.. And I do tend to use more polystyrene at the bottom of my pots for that very reason.

Fuchsias don't usually do well in full sun - except the hedging varieties like magellanica - so put their tub in the shadier end of your balcony.
