I moved into a new house and this tree is in the front garden, it flowered in spring with pale purple flowers at the end of the branches. Does anyone know what it is?

It resembles Hibiscus syriacus , although they normally flower in late Summer .

smokinsnail, please can you tell us where this pic was taken.
    Perthshire. SCOTLAND .
  • Thank you Paul, I’ve had a look at few photos of hibiscus syriacus online as you suggested and I don’t think it’s the one, the flowers on my plant are all one shade and don’t have any darker areas centrally. Thank you for your help though :)

Silver Surfer the photo was taken in Cornwall, England in May.
  • I think it might be a abutilon x suntense having done some more googling

    Thank you.
Abutilon  vitifolium was an idea but last time I saw one in flower it was in mid June...with masses of leaves on the shrub.

Weird to see it almost leafless and flowering in spring.

Sometimes, a dying plant will blossom in a last-gasp attempt to reproduce and this may be what has happened here.  Has it fully leafed up since?  I had it happen to a wisteria which flowered early then died.  It was Honey fungus in my case. :(
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Hi Bob,

That might be it, it hasn’t leafed up it’s just got one tiny green leaf left. I’ll give it a hard prune and see what happens next year...
