Chelsea Physic Garden were doing a lot of watering gravel paths yesterday. There must be better ways to use a sprinkler.

For the last week, I've not been pulling the plug in the kitchen sink after doing the washing-up (using as little detergent as possible).  We do our washing up in a square plastic "bowl" which is permanently sitting in the sink.  So once the washing-up is finished, I lift the bowl out and take it out to the garden and with one hand flick it rain-drop style around the bases of the shrubs.  They're still thriving.

Try not to worry too much Mary.  You can use a watering can and used washing up water etc. Use a bowl to wash your hands in and save the vegetable cooking water - all can be re-used. As the others say, watch the plants and only water those that you can see wilting. If you water them in turn over a week, most will survive. If you've got a good gardening book and/or access to internet and know what you've planted, you could research which of the plants you've got need lots of water, and concentrate on those.
Good luck, can't believe Ireland's got a hosepipe ban and suspect south England may be next.
