Lavender

I am an expat living in southern Norway where temperatures can get to minus 15. Can anyone suggest a type of lavender that can survive the winter?

It's difficult to advise without knowing what Lavenders are available to you in Norway,  but assuming you can get these, then Lavender x intermedia or Lavender angustifolia are all hardy to at least -15C and probably lower....
So if you see any of those then you should be alright I would think.

A couple of favourites of mine which have survived my garden in East Anglia England, which can occasionally suffer from severe winter weather, are Lavender x intermedia 'Gros Bleu'... 'Grosso' and 'Grappenhall'..

Lavender angustifolia 'Hidcote'... 'Maillette''. and 'No. 9'... but I wouldn't know if you can get any of these..  angustifolia is of course English Lavender...

These are the only types of Lavender I know of that are hardy at least to those temps..
    East Anglia, England
  • Thanks for the advice. I'll buy some plants next time I am in the UK. Buy the  way, I grew up in Norwich!

They will survive better if on very well drained soil. Wet roots in winter  will kill them.

Absolutely this. It got down to those temperatures often when i lived in the NE of Belgium but the soil was light and well drained so they survived.
  • Lavender also enjoys soil with some lime in it. I have started giving mine, here in Cornwall, an annual dusting of lime. My plants are growing in a raised bed so are well drained. I crossed everything and gave them a severe haircut last autumn, cutting down into woody growth, knowing I was risking losing them but they have grown better than ever, just coming into flower now. I am surprised they have done so well after the rigours of the Beast from the East which hit us earlier this year and their haircut.
