Lawn Renovation Project

Hi all,

I'm looking to completely renovate a small section of lawn, the area must be around 30m squared in total.  The area is mostly moss and weeds on compacted turf, not overgrown however; I'm wondering what the course of action should be.  I'm looking to glyphosate the lot to start fresh but should I put down iron sulphate to get rid of the moss first?  I'm told glyphosate doesn't kill moss.  Or will glyphosate do the trick?

Would it then just be a case of raking / scarifying, top dressing & seeding?

Cheers

Glysophate will kill everything, did you want to kill the grass as well?
If that's the case wait till Autumn and take up the turf and get rid of the weeds then either seed or returf
  • Yeah, there's not much grass there - less than 10% i reckon. I'll be doing this by hand - will taking up the turf be easy enough for one person?

If I can do it female and in my sixties yes it's reasonably easy. Best method I found was to slice the grass into square blocks and then  slide a spade just a few inches under the turf and on my knees push it under the grass. Its best done with the soil moist not baked hard.
If you have a moss problem that usually means poor drainage so the other option is to dig the whole patch over, take out weeds and grass and re- level the soil. If you are returfing you need to allow for thickness of turf so it matches the rest of the area.
Even if you weedkill it all you will still have to get rid of the roots and dead top growth.
