What's wrong with my tree?

Hello

I moved to my new home about a year ago and this prunus(?) has always looked poorly. The bottom 3 foot is blacky grey and appears to be destroying the bark.

It has come into leaf but it's quite sparse. Is this fixable?

Thanks!

Morning Mertyn. These trees are naturally not very long lived in tree terms and I would say that yours is now on its way out. My neighbour has one in a similar state and nothing can be done.

I agree, it looks like it's had canker for a very long time and the disease is now nearly girdling the lower trunk, preventing most of the sap from rising, hence the sparseness of leaves.
Look on it as an opportunity to plant something new. :)
