What kind of tulip, please?

ian385ian385 Posts: 7
Can anyone tell me what kind of tulip - if it is indeed a tulip - this is? It looks a bit like t. biflora but they're only supposed to be about 10cm tall and these are much bigger. I've just dug all the red-ish coloured bulbs and am drying them. I'll replant them in the autumn. They were very congested and produced many leaf-only plants this spring (we moved here last autumn). The other stuff to the left is garlic. Thank you.

Possibly tulipa clusiana, the lady tulip?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think so. Tulipa clusiana have narrow leaves and these are very broad - about 4cm at their widest.

It looks similar in size and shape to the Kaufmanniana tulip Ancilla, which I have grown and which will repeat flower. Maybe some other variety in the same group?

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I'm not sure how helpful this is but they look like these tulips I bought from Sainsbury's as miniature mixed tulips.

    Maybe Tulipa polychroma.

    Need more details.
    Quote Pacific bulb soc...

"Tulipa polychroma is from Iran and Afghanistan. It is an excellent miniature species for the rock garden, with charming white "star cups" on 2-3" (5 - 7.5 cm) stems. The center of the flower is yolk yellow, but it's the outside of the flowers that give this species its character. The back of the outer 3 tepals are tinged matte olive-mauve, and the back of the 3 inner tepals are lightly striped with green and blue."

They look lovely (how do you keep them in the top of the bottle and stop them falling down) but I think they're too small and the petals too wide.

Could be, but again I think the leaves are too narrow.

I shall take a closer and clearer picture next year.
