There is absolutely nothing like your first TOMATO

Daughter bought back from America, year before last seeds for OH. A Tomato called Early Girl. They grew huge and early and tasted wonderful. We tried without success to find them on sale anywhere in GB. Could order from USA but price prohibitive. Well luckily we begrudgingly saved the last tom for it’s seeds and were duly planted in the greenhouse this year. Today we had strong cheddar sliced “Early Girl” salt and pepper in a sandwich. The flavour....... wish I could have shared with you all, there is nothing like a home grown tom, especially the FIRST.

Sounds amazing. You’ve given me tomato envy. Most of mine showing no sign of ripening yet, but swelling nicely. Can’t wait to start picking once they’re ripe.

I’ve got money maker, Alicante, Roma, Black Russian and tumbling toms in hanging bags. If this hot weather keeps up, it might be too long till I get some ripe tomatoes.

Have to say Womble54 (by the way iPad keeps changing your name to Wimbledon!! ) the rest i.e Alicante are growing in stifling heat but yet to ripen as well. The OH tried one called Indigo Ruby and Indigo Blue Beauty, the later are as big as Early Girl and just changing to purple/ red. Had 5 nice cucumbers, tasty ridge and Bancock. Both very sweet and juicy also great with cheese. Have yet to find a cake recipe for cu’s despite many suggestions of what to do with the cu’s ( all very polite suggestions too, would expect nothing less of GW forum members)👼Last years glut of courgettes made super cakes.

I have Alicanti , Black Russian and sungold? but yellow ones anyway mine are like yours Womble54 small but growing . Wont be long before plants hit the greenhouse roof, so lots of flowers. The cucumbers already taken a right angle at the top.😁

I am jealous! I have 6 types of tomato this year, Tigrella, Cerry cerise, golden sunrise, Zyska, Victorian Dwarf and Sibirskiy Stambovyi.

The tigrella, Zyska and Victorian dwarf are all teasing me with masses of tomatoes that look like they are about to ripen any second.. but won't! The other three.. are slightly behind and pathetic!

As mentioned on other threads, not a great idea to bring plants / seeds in from other countries. GW was saying, not even from other parts of the UK. Diseases are spreading like crazy and  some more or less impossible to stop.

My tomatoes always tasted horrible. I could buy any in Tescos that were better. Fingers crossed for this year.

I presumed that tomatos would ripen quicker than normal, with the extra sun and heat we've been getting?

    I've finally gone cherry.

It's that time between being full sized and ripening that seems to take forever. That first red one, and then I like to wait until another is turning before picking the first (read somewhere that they need stimulating to ripen from one already ripe) it seems to take weeks I know bit of an exaggeration but it does.

I had my first sungold on 29 June and had about more 6 so far - after 9 months of supermarket toms, at last the real thing! So sweet and tomatoey
    Some suncherry almost there too
