Digitalis when flowering done

  • You can cut down in the hope of some more flowers ... but they're never very spectacular ... I usually leave the seeds to ripen and when they begin to open I cut the stems and swish them around the borders scattering seed in areas where I want more foxgloves in the future.
Thanks. As nice as they are I’m trying to ‘control’ them so maybe cutting down is best option?
  • At this stage 8n the season is it possible to lift the plants and put them in pots? My border looks so tired. I am going to cut the flower spikes and set some seeds for next year.

I'd also like to know, can l cut the spikes off and dry them in the greenhouse.  If l then sowed the seeds, would l get flowers next year ? Many thanks.

I guess you will get flowers as my 3 original ones I planted last summer have multiplied to give me about 25 individual plants.

Seed from white ones doesn’t come white, according to Monty (so it must be true).
They mostly come white,  especially if they're some distance from the other colours

Sarah Junks, for the seed to be viable, it has to ripen on the plant. Cutting the spike and then drying it will not give you good seed.

I love them all, but not when they take liberties.
if you want to grow a really special one, short stocky very strong plant, try Summer King.  They feel and look like velvet.
They have self seeded and come true but I don’t think they will next year.

@Lyn ............can you tell me what the lovely little white flowered plants are, they seem to grow fairly tall, to the left of the beautiful digitalis?  Not the antirrhinum.
