Knotweed?

Any thoughts? It's in the distance so hard to get a close shot, but I thought I could see the opposing leaves?

Welcome any thoughts!

I cant see the main stem, but I think not. The leaves don't seem to be heart shaped.

    Possibly.

If you look at this website,

    https://www.phlorum.com/services/japanese-knotweed/domestic-knotweed-removal/knotweed-identification/

Go down to the section titled “in summer” and click on the photo titled “mature summer growth”.Compare your photo with that one.

Thanks, does look similar. I guess the leaves don't seem to be that heart shaped but hard to tell at a distance.

i've worked with knotweed for many years... that is Japanese knotweed,

I hope it isn't in your garden, it needs reporting to your local council as it is classed as a 'notifiable noxious weed' along with giant hogweed. its the land owners responsibility to remove it safely so that it doesn't spread!

I don't think your photos are close-up enough to say for sure. There's a pattern on the stems and the leaves are a distinctive shape. I can't see that on your photos.

My local council does not require reporting of Japanese knotweed.

If it's not.....it's very very similar. I would get something sorted to be on the safe side.

I agree with treehugger, it looks like JKW. to me.

  • Thanks for the thoughts. I live on a new build development where JKW was removed before construction last year. There is a management plan in place which is meant to finish this summer so will flag it to them!

Your views have given me confidence to make an issue of it though with the developer so thank you!

Yes ... that looks like an established JKW plant to me.  So many people only recognise the "young shoots" form ... an established shrub in it's second year or more, looks like that.

I would definitely 'make an issue' of it ... in the nicest possible way  ;)
