Young plants eaten

Hi All
I am a novice and this spring I grew several plants from seed. Unfortunately quiet a few were eaten by some sort of insects when I put them out in the garden. What should I have sprayed them with? Prefer to use organic options
Thank you in advance for your advice

You don't say what plants, but any new growth could be eaten by birds as well as bugs or slugs so spraying might not be the answer.
  • Hi
The plants were zinnia, calendula , astrantia and malope triffida. Some are still going but there leaves have been eaten....definitely not by birds

Slugs will probably be the culprits. Unfortunately this is gardening.
grow as many as you can of the varieties then pot them on until they are big plants before planting out.  The bigger the plant, the better they will resist pests.

The only other thing I have found that helps is water retention crystals sprinkled around the plants they look a bit messy but by the time the plants are big enough to not be in danger you can dig them in.
  • Thanks Lyn and PurplerAllim - good tips  - will be better prepared next year now!
I am a long way off an airbrushed looking garden  :#
