Aucuba black leaves

I've noticed two Aucuba japonica "Crotonifolia' in two separate gardens with completely black leaves that have wilted.  This happened before this recent heatwave and one is in partial shade and kept watered so it isn't the heat.  The rest of the plant seems fine but some entire branches have blackened and died back.  I also noticed a few leaves on an A. japonica 'Dentata' too which I hadn't seen before.  Any ideas what is causing it?  Many thanks.

    I had that on mine last year and googled it. Apparently, it's not fatal. You cut out the affected branches. I've been getting rid if my acuba, but the ones that have escaped the fork are fine this year.

    Did you find out what it was when you googled it? I can't find anything.  It looks like a fungus but I would have thought I'd find something on google as it seems to be a common problem.

    Not sure why I didn't find that!  I must have used the wrong wording in google.  Thanks B3 that's really helpful and reassuring that it's not terminal.  I'm a bit worried about the Dentata though as it was a baby and newly potted up and a couple of the leaves went brown over a few days last week so it wasn't caused by a cold, wet winter.
