    Mine keeps playing dead, I cut it down prior to digging it out and it sprouts again so I leave it. This has been going on so long that I can't even remember what colour I bought!

    Just goes to show the idiosyncracies of plants and gardening in general ; my Nerium stood outdoors (E.Lincs) throughout the full onslaught of the 'Beasts' with no protection whatsoever ; my Dicksonia likewise ,  plus others like Crinodendron patagua and Azara microphylla .They all burst into growth earlier than usual , yet an established and (what I assumed) to be a fully hardy established Pyracantha has died completely ! Bizarre !!

    My Oleander sheds leaves all the time.Looks lovely this year.Although it is not supposed to be fully hardy in the UK mine is in a pot outside all year round even through the 'Beast from the East' earlier this year!
    A few years ago it got sooty mould and scale insects and tried allsorts to put it right.In the end I cut it right back really hard and it has flourished ever since!

    @Nollie

    Sorry to go OT for the moment but are you having the same problem with diseased olive trees in Spain that they are in Greece and Italy?  I know it's opposite ends of the Med but I've heard it was transported from elsewhere and infected the trees there by grafting?

    Hi Laura, i assume you mean xylella, yes it’s been detected in the Balearic Islands and in Valencia - the latter mostly on almonds. Last time I heard that was as far as it had spread. Not a massive Olive growing area where I am though, so may not necessarily be reported in the local press. If it has/does hit the vast Andalucian olive groves, that would be financially devastating. I have three ornamental olives which look lovely but rarely give me any olives. It affects Oleander too, but Fred’s Nan’s plant should be safe!

    And don't burn any old wood from it as to breathe in the smoke it is toxic. That and Fig.

    Hi apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I've inherited 2 oleander about a meter tall... Can anyone tell me if they are happy in pots? Also is it irresponsible to grow them near a doorway given their toxicity?

    Thanks!

    I grow mine in pots because they are a bit tender and need some protection against hard frosts. They need at least 6 hours of sun a day to flower well and lots of water in the summer then a little drier over winter. Some feed is good too.

    I wouldnt worry about the toxicity as far as brushing past it, I have a large one by the front door with no problems. Although, if you prune it wear gloves as it has a sap that can irritate and NEVER burn the prunings, the smoke from it is very toxic.

    Hope this helps.
