Laurel hedge info please.

Hi, I have an 8ft high laurel hedge which has a 4ft wooden fence in front of it. I want to remove the fence, but I don’t know if the laurel will sprout behind where the fence was to create a hedge from the ground up. Would anyone know the answer please?

It definite will but I think you would need to prune the top and existing sides to urge it into shooting out.  Is there any growth behind the fence?

No Lyn, it’s too dark at the moment to allow growth I think.

Then you will need to open it up, let the light in and give it a trim, never known it to die I’ve cut one-off my hedges right to the ground and they’re up about 3’ in one summer,

Well thanks for that Lyn, that’s very encouraging. I’ve been too timid to go for it, but I’ll give it a go. Would there be a best time to do it do you know?

As it’s 8’I would have it down to 4’, I know it will look absolutely bald and horrible, but honestly, it will sprout out everywhere,  you’ll love it next year, just got to be patient for this year.

Thanks again, I’ll give it a go, I know it will look bad before it gets better, so I haven’t a problem with that. Lol
