Clematis cirrhosa Freckles blooming in June

wjba36wjba36 Posts: 11

As the title says, my clematis freckles has started flowering.  I noticed it a week or so ago, it has several blooms on it now, all bigger that in winter.

Thinking back on it I did prune it back hard a little late, could that be the reason?  And will it still flower next winter?

Also bought and planted a Clematis Volunteer which sadly got attacked by slugs and snails to a point where the flowers lost all their petals.  The plant still looks healthy enough with green leaves and seeds heads on stems, just no petals and it doesn’t seem to be growing.

Please can anyone advise on the above, it would be greatly appreciated.

Plants don't read garden manuals and can react to pruning/weather/stress in different ways including flowering.

I suggest you give both of them a good drink and maybe a bit of tomato feed now and again between now and late August.    Volunteer is a short clem anyway so, assuming you've planted it properly (nice and deep with good compost/soil) and can protect it from slug and snail attack, it will be fine.   Keep both well watered during this hot spell.  Clematis don't like to be thirsty.

My 'Freckles' often flowers in the summer as well as in the winter ... it seems perfectly happy and healthy so I don't worry about it.  :)

Many thanks to both for putting my mind at rest.

Will certainly be watering them well - long may the sunshine last.

Wondered how other peoples' Freckles are doing now?

At the moment, despite having flowered off and on all summer,  mine is covered with more buds than ever before ... it's going to look absolutely gorgeous very soon  :D

  • Loads of flowers on mine at the moment. I'm very pleasantly surprised as they looked desperately unhappy (almost dead) after the dry spell.

Ours had a few flowers  Dovefromabove.
But did the usual looking horrendous playing dead thing through August/September. Despite being used to them doing it, I thought the hot weather had done for them.
Lansdowne Gem is also in flower, and C. balearica a tiny bit behind.
Have not got a handle on our Wisley cream yet. I hope it is a fussy thing and not my fault its been pants since I bought it.
  • No flowers on our freckles at all yet - in fact I haven't even noticed any buds - the plant is now two years ago and I would have expected some flowers although it has put on a massive growth this year - approx 2 - 3 metres tall, twisting up a tree.
