We’ve come across this and have let a small bit grow. Any ideas what it is?  Assuming a weed.  Thanks

Chinese lanterns, not a weed! Be patient and you'll have spectacular orange lanterns at the end of the summer into autumn.

You've already got a couple at bottom right of the photo, they will change colour.  Inside them is an edible fruit, the supermarkets sell them for something like £m a kilo and posh restaurants use them for garnish.  Texture of a cherry tomato, taste like coconut.
  • Will teach us not to look at bottom of plant.  Thanks.  Obviously now you’ve told me I could straight away tell you the Latin name was physalis just couldn’t identify it 🙄

The lanterns are lovely popped on to fairy lights. I collect them up at Halloween and have around my bookcase through the winter.

The plants can spread easily when they are happy. So keep an eye on them.
