roses

I have a red rose which is in a pot at the minute which it was bought and a white rose. the red rose says plant in ground in autumn, the white rose doesn't say anything. my question is can I plant in multi purpose compost and do I have to wait till autumn or will it be ok now.

You can plant them in now, but you will need to keep an eye on the watering and cut the top growth off to allow them time to settle in and concentrate on root development. Multi purpose compost is fine too, but if you have very free draining soil, you will need to mix in a lot of it into the surrounding soil.

sorry, yes both In pots I bought the red one about 6 weeks ago it has grown a bit since this pic, it says plant in autumn, I bought the white one this week it doesn't say anything when to plant so I assume I can plant now (the white one is  a different type of rose to the red) anyway I am new to roses and I would like to plant both now next to each other but because it said autumn I was hesitant, and I thought roses need a certain type of soil, hope I have explained this better

Roses generally do well in more heavier and rich soil, so if you have soil that is very free draining, you will need to put a lot of compost into the soil to bulk it up. You can plant them in now, but you will need to water them very well in the summer months to help them settle in. I also suggest you cut down some of the top growth to minimise stress to the plants.
  • also where I plan to plant is going to be slightly raised so I need to build the soil up with compost
  • thanks both of you, I will wait a bit then and just prepare the ground ready for them.

  • I will be planting them here hopefully when ground is prepared.
  • excellent, many thanks, hope they bloom well for me.
