After my disastrous start to try and grow Clematis I have shelved that idea for now, maybe try again next year. When would be the best time to start?

Also how can I stop whatever is eating my flower plants, great big holes in the leaves?

    I've tried pellets.

You'll have to show us what the plant is, where it's growing and what the damage is.   Could be all sorts.

If you really do want your garden to look good and grow things well I think you may need to bone up on basic knowledge about how plants grow and how to prepare soil/pots/tubs to give plants what they need to do well.  Some like poor soil, some rich, some like it well drained and others need moisture retentive.  Some need alkaline soil, some acid and some don't care.   Some like full sun, others a lot of shade and some dappled shade or sun just half the day.

I suggest you investigate this feature on the Beeb - http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/htbg/ as it breaks down info into easy chunks.

Spend autumn and winter improving the soil and erecting trellis and support wires for climbers like clematis and roses and honeysuckle and then buy decent sized clematis in spring and plant them properly.

If you want roses and other shrubs, the best time to plant is autumn when the soil is still warm and they can get their roots down.   Spring bulbs also need to be planted in autumn - immediately for small bulbs which can dry out, from now for daffodils and from November for tulips.

If you make a list of the kind of things you want to grow you can look them up on the RHS website and also ask more specific questions here.   Someone here usually knows the answer.
