    Pear?
  • It looks like a pear to me but my neighbour says (admittedly without much conviction) not.  It grows on the strip of land/bank between our gardens and the farmer's field.

what does your neighbour think it is?

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • My neighbour thinks it is a crab apple (although his long awaited canna flowers turned out to be a banana so he may have as much clue as I do) this being the first year it has fruited.  I don't know much at all about fruit trees; it is the "dropped" pear shape that is confusing me with these as I thought crab apples were rounded...but perhaps not all are.

Did you notice the blossom colour?
  • Annoyingly, no!

Well it's a wait and see job then. If they stay small it's a crab apple which if it's on waste ground might have self seeded by birds and only big enough to fruit this year.
  • Thanks for your input :)   I am rather hoping it's a pear but I think on this occasion my neighbour does know his apples from his bananas....

It's a pear.  Leaves and shape/size of the fruit on the stem say so.  You might want to thin them out a bit in a few weeks.. if it's your tree.
