What wrong with Cosmos?

FlinsterFlinster Posts: 883
Morning! I’ve noticed a lot of my cosmos have developed distorted thick leaf growth. There are a few blackfly ant farms in the patch, but not dreadful. Could this be the cause or something else?

My first thoughts were weedkiller damage. Have you used farm yard manure or similar?

I dug in a manure/soil improver a few weeks before planting, but haven’t mulched them or fed them, and I don’t use weed killers. Nothing else in the bed seems affected.

Ha, that’s a lie! I do use weedkillers, but very rarely and not around the borders... tends to be on stubborn brambles etc 🤥

Is it some kind of fasciation ? (On the cosmos that is, nothing to do with the cat!)

Yes it does look similar. I wonder if I I should cut it out?

It does look like weedkiller.  Could the roots only just now be growing into the manure layer?  Or was it all mixed together?  Could some have drifted from a neighbor?  My parents are surrounded by fields.. and get weird growth on the plants near the edges once in a while if the farmer sprays during a windy day.

I could cut it off.  They will bloom later, but on the bright side: it sort of extends your season and flower heights.  :)
