Also, there's much less data on the tiny stuff, like a condor mite, than there is on beautiful creatures like bees and condors. So it's hard to know of declines and extinction. More data, means more knowledge. More knowledge means more potential to trace the impact of our actions.

I agree with all views above as it just increases the discussions we humans have about our fellow inhabitants on Planet earth........which is good.
Leave it to you to carry on the discussion which started from me asking for an insect identification.
    Its Good to Talk

As I said yesterday on another thread ... I love the way some of these threads turn into real conversations  :)

We can save The Planet by electing Lady Gardeners to all positions of power so they can sort out the World Challenges over a seed swop and a pot of tea........This is a Compliment !! <3

Dont know if youve ever seen anything about the reintroduction of wolves in one of the american national parks (yellowstone I think), and the knock on effect it had. They'd been hunted to extinction there. This in turn meant the elk population increased, which decimated the trees, meaning the beavers left, which meant the rivers no longer got dammed, meaning the flood plains vanished. Vast amounts of flora and fauna were badly hit as a result and the whole landscape changed dramatically.

They reintroduced wolves a while back, the elk and deer numbers were reduced, the trees returned, the beavers returned and the rivers began flooding again. Equilibrium was restored and the landscape quickly reverted to how it was before in a relatively short amount of time. We should always be careful what we meddle with!

I'm in the middle of reading a book about that.

It does give a good account of both sides of the wolf debate but the author is obviously pro-wolf. It's very hard to sympathise with the anti-wolf position though as it's very personal to a small amount of local hunters and farmers who are losing out due to the reintroduction. A huge gain for wildlife and an apparent small loss for people who like to hunt wildlife. The politics and legal wrangling makes for very depressing reading and makes garden pesticide use look quite tame in comparison.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

yep, and I do understand the reaction from the anti-wolf camp, its very easy to champion reintroducing them when its not affecting you. Its a good illustration of how the welfare of one species directly and indirectly affects many others though, like your condor mite.

Good little short video of the story here for anyone interested https://www.yellowstonepark.com/things-to-do/wolf-reintroduction-changes-ecosystem

" We should not kill other creatures...because we can "
If we humans leave this planet it will revert back to Pre Humans and probably be a better place for all remaining creatures.
When computers arrived I watched my friend program a game into the PC which was a field with 6 foxes and a few rabbits. As the foxes ate more rabbits they bred more and the rabbits numbers went down. The foxes then starved and reduced and more rabbits were left alive.
