Speaking as an artist ... I totally agree with Papi Jo .... and of course, the cost of transporting heavy terracotta pots rather than lightweight plastic is very different ... it all adds up.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I remember seeing a programme in which a man had made lots of containers from styrofoam boxes which were discarded packaging, I think for fresh fish. He made drainage holes, then coated the boxes in a mix of coir, sand, cement and water.
I bought a couple of large white plastic pots as they said it would not absorb the hot sun so much. Never again. They are naff and ugly and stick out like a sore thumb.
Is it worth paying a visit to a reclamation yard or charity shop - one man's trash is gold to another. I decorated a few plastic pots with shells - however the adhesive went brittle in the hot sun - but they did look nice at first.
I saw some vile plastic not particularly large containers last year. Apparently they were a special kind of plastic, light enough to use on a balcony -yerwot! That heavy plastic is a real problem They were over £30 each!
