Very interesting posts,as I'm just looking on Amazon to see what the specs are for a preformed small pond for wildlife.Do you need a pump? I kept Koi once, and realise that this is a completely different thing. What do you suggest for starter plants,I am looking at a small 55 litre one. My garden is longish and narrow, and I have access to lots of Welsh stone.

    That's interesting @Dovefromabove
Can I ask where you got your snails please? I'd like some in my little pond
I bought some Lymnaea stagnalis from here https://www.naturescape.co.uk/product-category/pond-marsh-plants/pond-plants-t-z-pond-snails-baskets/

We bought 20 ... we now have what seems like hundreds  :o  and we have dragonfly nymphs and newts in the pond along with the snails and frogs.

    Lovely - thanks Dove
I've got lots of newts and little 'uns, pond skaters and all sorts of bugs in the water, lots of flourescent (damsel?) flies doing what they do this time of year, it's a facinating world to watch. No frogs yet though, but I've added more logs to the pile and am building another mini-rockery that goes into the pond at the other end.

I'll wait until the heatwave ends before ordering the snails, the pond is coming up to 2 yrs old now so hopefully they'll be ok

See how clear the water is ... everything except the grass to the right is below the surface.

Lots of pond snails .... although we try to keep the falling leaves out of the pond in the autumn, it is below an ash tree so some always get in there, and the snails just munch them up.

  • Gosh those snails are monsters compared with our tiny little specimens.  I think I will be ordering some too. Pete, we have worked out that for our pond - without postage we will need to spend almost £80 for the Cloverleaf and sludgebuster.  How often do you apply it, and can we use the Cloverleaf Blanket with the sludgebuster too?

They certainly have grown since we got them ... and they keep 'getting together' and more and more appear  :)

We found it easier to dig out the hole and use a good quality flexible liner ... I found

very helpful with advising re the pond and the plants that would suit best.

Pete, will the koi eat the snails?  I know goldfish do a quick number on any size snails in reach.. but I'm not sure about koi.
