Raised Beds - first time growing anything

Good Evening,

My wife and have recently decided that we want to start trying to grow some veg in our garden. We don't have a huge amount of space, but we were thinking a mix of raised beds (i'm yet to build) and some 8gal grow bags (on order).

I have a good space (good sun from about 1100 until it sets, nice and close to the outside tap). It is about 200cm x 35cm. So I was thinking of building a long 'thin' bed. The area is currently on gravel and I have read various articles that state that this is ok, but is it?

However, my question is, do I need to line the bed with anything? I was already planning on lining the inside of the wood i'm going to use (decking lengths), but do I need to line the bottom as well. Possibly to stop the soil being washed out?

Thanks,

George

PS: I'm thinking of planting some carrots, spring onions and lettuce. Is this suitable for a late June/Early July Sow? Anything else I could sow now?

Best of luck!  I would line the wood with plastic, and the bottom with weed membrane cloth.. as you said, something to keep the soil from washing out.  The weed membrane will still allow for reasonable drainage.  Some membranes are better than others.. go for a quality rather than easy-to-tear black plastic type with pin holes.

Kale and kohlrabi would be a nice addition to the salad you're growing.

Thank you Blue Onion. How deep would you suggest the raised bed is, i’m currently planning around 30cm?

    Thanks!!
