Dead tree fern?

been growing tree ferns for 4 years. Last winter I protected the crown with straw. The taller is ok but I haven't had any new fronds develop on the smaller fern. I'm hoping its just been knocked back by the late cold spell in March. I've posted picture. Shall I wait befor removing it .is it a goner.

I am sure Monty Don had the same problem.

My tree fern looks dead too.  It was covered during the winter but the "knuckles" went black and I snapped them off as someone on another forum (who apparently knows about tree ferns) suggested,  presumably to make way for new shoots if it is going to recover.  I am still watering it as I understand they can recover but might even take a year to do so.   I also had an olive tree in a pot which looked completely dead after winter and got chucked behind the compost heap.  Last week I found it had sprouted new shoots so never give up.   Needless to say I rapidly put it back in a pot!

There's still plenty of green in those older fronds, so it's not dead.
    Patience and lots of water.
    Devon.
