Kilmarnock Willow problems

My bother and sister in law have a Kilmarnock Willow planted in a pot, it’s been fine for 2 years but now appears to be dying , the pot appears plenty big enough, they water it daily, have done nothing different, I will attempt to upload pics. Any ideas what is wrong? How to solve it?

They need massive amounts of water. My guess is that it's got dehydrated and any water going in is going straight through. The pot isn't really big enough for it. I'd cut it back [take the annuals out first]  and then submerge that in a big bucket of water till it's completely hydrated. You might be able to remove it from the pot which would be easier. They're quite hard to kill, but there's a lot of dead looking wood there, so anything you do to revive it will help!
Has it ever had the soil/compost refreshed that it's planted in? There possibly isn't much left in there, and that will have a bearing on it's growth and health too. Compost alone won't be adequate for long term growing in a pot.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Oh thank you - will try this, we were discussing maybe it needed much more water - will give this a go.

Try taking it out and having a look at it's condition Jane.
It can be hard to make judgements on a photo, but it would be my best guess that's it's just dried out too much. They don't tend to suffer from many problems like pests or diseases  :)
