Droopy roses!

Rob LockwoodRob Lockwood Posts: 380
Hi all

I planted my first rose - a David Austin "Jubilee Celebration" bare-root - last autumn and it's doing well, but there are 2 "problems": as you'll see below,

1) the leaves are yellowy, which I've read means I'm watering it too much?
2) the buds are wilting which presumably suggests the opposite!

Any clues welcome...

Hi Rob.......I can only tell you about my DA rose..........it's in it's 3rd year and it's only this year that the plant seems strong enough to support it's many petaled flowers.  I'm sure someone with more experience will follow later.

Thanks Mary - the big bloom here is certainly many-petalled, so that may well be part of the story!

Bump!  I've had an email from David Austin today telling me to water the rose daily, but I'm worried about the less-than-green leaves - any more comments very welcome!
  • I am sure some of these still very "young" DA roses have trouble supporting the flowers early on.   The nursery in our village has a new DA stand with a selection of their roses.  All looked healthy, well cared for and well watered... And at least half of them had droopy,  downward facing blooms.  I am sure they improve enormously with age.

Yes, mine (DA Princess Alexandra of Kent) are so much better and stronger this year (Year 3) than they were last year. Also I hard pruned them to quite short stems in the spring.

    Thanks both - very reassuring.
