Hybrid Tea or Floribunda ?

1silverzz1silverzz Posts: 4
Hi guys,

I purchased a beautiful Papa Meilland rose a few years back, in fact, I purchased two from two separate places.

As far as I am aware Papa Meilland is supposed to be a hybrid tea rose, but both of the Papa Meilland roses I purchased (again both from different places) are showing signs of being a floribunda.

I may be completely wrong of course so I am asking what you guys think.

I have attached two images for you to see.

Let me know if you think they are a hybrid tea or a floribunda.

Thanks!

In my poor and unasked for opinion, I think your garden is blessed and you are a gifted gardener, because your Papa Meilland is doing great. In fact, hybrid teas- when happy (therefore the compliment) often give forth many buds a stem, as yours are doing. If you want big, blousy roses, nip off the extra ones at growing stage and... voilá (that was infamous, wasn't it?).

DimWit, thank you very much for your advice and compliment, you are a very kind person :)

Actually, I indirectly did ask for your advice since you're a member of this forum and I was asking anyone who had an opinion on the subject and I'm very glad you did post as it wasn't a poor opinion at all!

I'm quite happy for them to give as many buds in a stem as they would like, the more the better ! I was just worried I got unlucky (twice) and wasn't given the strain I asked for.

On a side note, I have a 'Mr Lincoln' rose in my garden which in the first year gave the most powerful fragrance I think I personally have ever smelt, but for the last two years the fragrance is hardly there, is their anything specific I wonder what might be causing it, the rose itself apart from that is very healthy and vigorous .

Papa Meilland is a repeat flowering HT ... it looks as if your very healthy looking  rose is going to be in flower almost constantly so it stands to reason that it'll produce side buds below the terminal one ... lucky you ... it looks as if you're going to get roses all summer  :)

A rose is designated what it is by the breeder, so if the breeder says it's a hybrid tea, then that's what it is, and in this case as the parents were Chrysler Imperial x Charles Mallerin - both of which were hybrid teas, it can't be anything else really..

Many such roses offer up blooms in clusters of a few...  nice rose, very sweetly scented from what I recall... I'm glad it's doing well for you...

Thank you for the answers Dovefromabove and Marlorena :)

Marlorena I did not buy it from a breeder and sometimes mistakes do happen, I've had breeders genuinely make mistakes before and mix up a strain, which is why I've asked for opinions here :)

I'm happy though to know it's still possible to have more than one bud on a hybrid tea, and all other clues def point to it being Papa Meilland, so very happy indeed !Thanks again everyone !
