    Thanks all for your replies, think I am going to have to go with the poison.  I have already borrowed my sisters jack russel, she goes mad but cant get at it because it is burrowed into my old stone wall.  I have had all obvious holes cemented up but it just comes over the wall now.  I will try wetting the wall daily but someone told me they did not like bleach and I used a syringe to squirt bleach into all crevices and down side of wall and at base but within an hour it came over the top of the wall.  This is one tough rat!

    Rats are tough ... it's what they do.  :#

    My cat seems to have found a nest of rats............3 brought  home in the last three days.  I'm surprised at how beautiful they are when young.
