Rhubarb

NewBoy2NewBoy2 Posts: 1,813
I have had rhubarb for 3 years and its only this season that the spears have been about half the thickness of the previous years. The only difference is that I added horse manure to the garden for the first time in 12 years. Any thoughts friends

are you over cropping it? Around Mid July onwards no cropping to give it a rest. Also it could be caused its been a lot drier this spring.

I agree with Perki above ... lots and lots of water (and remove any flower stems which can occur when the plant is under stress e.g. drought) ... I stop picking at the end of June ... also only ever remove one third of the stems at a time.  The plant needs leaves to produce energy and grow.

Dove...love your strap line !!...Pure Dove !!

The only thing I can think is that I have never watered the plants before. I only take about 10 % at a time and there is no sign of flowers or stress....only in me !!

Water, and then water, and then more water after that.  They're thirsty plants  :)
