what is this plant?

Please could anyone shed some light on what this is? It was a very large, dense bush with thorns which we cut down in winter, now there are these little shoots coming up aroynd where the roots are. I think it may be some type of crab apple but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance..

    Hello sherilyn. I'm not sure what your plant is but it is not a crab apple - they don't have thorns.
    The leaves, with the red colouring look like Photinia or Red Robin as it is sometimes called but that shrub doesn't have thorns either.

    I think that's a Chaenomeles, commonly known as Japanese quince.  They can get quite large, and are spiny too.  Pretty flowers in Spring though, and edible fruit as well.

    I agree, I also think it looks like Japanese Quince, Chaenomeles Japonica/speciosa.
