Rhubarb Crown - Harvest in first year?

Hi,
I bought a Rhubarb Crown from a local Garden Centre and planted it in May this year. It seems to have taken well and I'm now curious as to whether the advice I read about leaving a Rhubarb for it's first season applies when from a crown and not from seed?
Or should I be taking the larger stalks (eg lower left and right) this season?
