Weigela - how far to cut back?

DebbieMarsDebbieMars Posts: 12
In the 14 years I've lived here I've never cut back the two weigelas, so the pair just got bigger and bigger, very woody and leggy.  How far can I cut the woody stems down to?  And more to the point will it grow back?  Before I started you couldn't see next doors garden!!

They should grow back. But be ready that they may not flower next year. You can prune further back if you need to, but it all depends on the shape and how you want it to grow.

Think you cut back about one third of old wood to ground level. That's per year. But I just cut back as l want, they grow away well.

I had a huge over grown one at our other house, I sawed it right down to the ground almost, it started shooting from the base, and although I lost some flowers the following year, it looked really nice.
I have two big red ones here that I’m going to do the same, if I get on with it it will make new flowering growth for next year.
Always something more pressing to do though.

Last autumn a tree surgeon dropped a large oak branch on mine and broke most of the branches.  This spring it has romped away and appears very healthy

This is what I did to my three pale pink variegated weigelas a couple of weeks ago. Don't know what came over me... !
