Clematis problems

  • I also have 3 of the Guernsey Cream variety AnniD.  I bought them as plug plants earlier this year and they are now approx 12 inches tall, and still in pots in our cold greenhouse (not so cold at this time of year though).  I saw the G.C. clematis on Beachgrove this morning and look forward to my clematis looking as good in flower next year.  No yellow leaves on mine at the moment.

I always use epsom salts on my Clematis to help with the magnesium. One tbl. to a gallon of warm water and then 2 cups of the solution on each plant once a month. Try one cup if your not sure.

My Clematis get a fungus that causes the leaves to turn brown and then the vine to die. The only remedy that I know it to cut off all of the dead material and let the plant grow back from the root (which it usually does). I think that most growers prune their Clematis every spring so that the flowers are always on new growth.'

This pair of plants has done very well this year,

but they certainly don't all look like this every year.

I feed them with both kinds of liquid fish fertilizer (5-1-1 and 0-10-10) along with the epsom slats. Clematis are beautiful, especially with all the varieties, but they can take some work.

  • They look beautiful LMH - in tip-top condition and the reward for all your efforts is all those gorgeous flowers. I have never heard of Epsom salts before - worth a try. thanks.
