Dahlias

Hi Im growing Dahlias for the first time and was wondering are they a bit behind? Also do you think they will flower this year?

Thanks

Fred

They are perfect Fred, get them in the garden as soon as you can and they’ll romp away.
They will flower first year even if you grow them from seed.

Look good to me, as well.

  • Thanks guys, I was reading you should pinch the growing shoots out, but I haven't got the heart to do it.

I’m growing mine for the first time, and having popped them in the border as plugs four weeks ago, started flowering two week ago.

Fred, if you pinch out the growing point, they will branch. You get flowers a couple of weeks later, but you get more of them.
  • Thanks for all your help.

@fidgetbones - if I do that when the sole flowers next fade on mine, will that also work for me?

Yes. A new flower bud is flat button shaped. After they have flowered the seed head to be is pointed. At that point, cut off the old flower down to the next leaf joints. They will then branch to form two more. If you keep dead heading they should flower until the frosts.
