Growing these for the first time and they are flowering well, but can I pinch the centres of the plants as taller than expected. Grown in large pots.

As a 20-yr-long annual phlox grower (uh-hmmm...), I can tell you: they grow tall! If you pinch them, they will end up producing thin, feeble branches that will draw along anyway. Next time try the naturally (uh-hmm....) compact varieties (I tried 'Promise' this year and they are weeny), but there are varieties with the name 'Dwarf' in them that are a bit more outstanding.

Assuming these are the annual variety? According to that great website seedaholics they can look ragged in hot weather and can be cut back.
