Tomatoes while I'm away?

Bagpuss57Bagpuss57 Posts: 256
I have been given a money maker tomato plant and have been looking after it for a short time and it's a staring to grow and look healthy. I am due to be away in August for two weeks. Will my tomatoes survive or will I need to think of a way to get them watered. How often should they be watered? I hope that I won't loose the plant while away if I can't get someone to water them.

Two weeks without water, just at the time the fruit should be swelling and ripening, certainly won't make for a good crop.  Is it indoors or out?  In a pot or in the ground?  If it's outdoors, you could take a chance on rainfall.  If it's in a pot, could you take it to a friend's house?

Arrange for a neighbor to water and pick what is ripe as payment?  Otherwise, a soaker hose and a timer switch are a good investment.  I use mine all summer, even when home, as it is one less job to do in the garden.
