What to grow here?

not a good picture I know but any ideas on what to grow under this magnolia stellata? Snowdrops and a couple of hellebores are planted for spring colour but you can see how dark it is mid summer. Any suggestions?

Nothing will grow under a dense canopy like that. Unless you want to remove the lower branches to let light in, basically all that will grow will be spring flowering bulbs. You may get away with adding some dwarf daffs such as tete a tete to your snowdrops.

As fidgetbones has it, you could try thinning out the magnolia branches and that clumping plant (agapanthus? phormium? can't see well!). Have seen tradescantia in very dark places, and it's not too meh, I think.

As above, hostas or tirarella, bergina, some euphorbias.  Have a look at the plantsforshade website they are very informative.

Ok thanks for the suggestions. I was going to have a go at thinning out the magnolia this autumn, it is very old and congested inside. I don’t want to cause it too much stress though by thinning too much. The clumping plant is an orange hermoracallis. Spreads every year but reliable with its rather spectacular flowers. Never heard of butchers broom. Will have to google that one
