You do it in the winter when it's dormant. You dig it up with as much rootball as you can manage. Chop it in half or more pieces depending on the size of the plant,(making sure each section has a growing point/crown)with a sharp spade and replant in prepared ground. Choose a mild day when the ground isn't frozen.
