What will happen to my sweet Williams?

BerkleyBerkley Posts: 431

My first attempt at growing these lovely plants! I sowed the seed in July 2016 and planted them out in the border .... come Spring 2017 they had grown into lovely , bushy plants - but not a single flower. So I left them in .... and look what I've got in June 2018! I had evidently sown the seed too late because seed I sowed in May last year has produced equally stunning flowers this June. I am picking bunches every day and they last in a vase for ages.... but just wondering : when they are finished, can I cut them back to lovely, fresh green mounds which will last all Summer (says she, hopefully) or will I have to pull them up and deal with the huge empty spaces left? Any ideas would be welcome.

Hi, mine last years and years, and as the plant stems run along the ground, they 'layer', putting down roots and so create new plants. They seem to keep flowering until the first frosts. I have tried ones with dark red flowers and they seemed less vigorous and a bit more reserved, but the pink ones just seem to want to party  continuously.  They're a doddle to take cuttings from (or uproot a chunk and grow it on). Amazing plants.
