Sun or shade, shrub or perennial. Flowers, size of container?
Clematis is good but needs a big pot. Roses, box topiary. Bamboo, grasses, alliums, agapanthus. The list is vast and without knowing the answer to my questions it's difficult to offer specific suggestions.

A choisya Sundance might do quite well in a good sized pot. It's often happy in part shade. Evergreen, pretty hardy, white flowers, a nice scent, long flowering.
  • Thank you everyone for your help.
  • Big showy leaves?Go for Fascia japonica. Good in shade. As you live in York look in Museum Gardens they did have one in large pot near Museum Street entrance.
