Northfacing shade

The front of our house is North facing and gets very little in the way of direct sunlight. I have two planters under the window (they sit on drainage gravel) but all attempts at growing something have failed. Looking for suggestions that would give some colour and structure, flowering would be a bonus. Thanks

I have a similar situation and have 2 planters facing north and under the porch canopy, so light levels are very poor.
I grow the little fibrous rooted begonias (bedding begonias) in them and edged with trailing lobelia. There's also a pot with ferns (they've been there forever, so no idea what variety) and their pale green leaves add some brightens too.
Considering the conditions they perform very well. I plant them up in May, and they do well over the summer, then I plant pansies for some winter colour late Sept

Are you looking for seasonal colour or perennials? And how big are your pots?
for seasonal colour, use fibrous rooted begonias or Busy Lizzie. Both do well in shade. For spring any of the bulbs will flower well.
Perennial planting look for what will do well in shade - euonymus, or acers if not too windy.
