I would expect most of the space would be best as a lawn for you and the dog to run about and excercise.  Is your dog a digger/chewer?  If so, that will help establish what type of planting and mulch to recommend.  My dog is neither.. but he does occasionally bury a chicken wing or turkey neck he can't finish, for later - of course!  Knowing this, I've mulched around select (expensive) trees with landscape fabric, rocks, then bark mulch.  Other areas are just bark mulch, as I don't mind too much.. it's infrequent.
Some lovely boarders along the edge will help visually widen the space, without taking out too much room from the center.
    Utah, USA.

Sorry OP a slight derailing. My girl once buried a chicken leg in the sofa... Luckily she grew out of that.

  • Sorry, I took so long been busy with work and trying to get myself active. in regards to Sun its rises on the left and sets on the right but on the far end of the garden there are loads of trees from the neighbouring nature reserve causing loads of shade unless the sun is directly overhead.

I took Fergus out in the garden yesterday evening and I was surprised how crap I was at doing plans see 1 rough below (apologise)

As you can see no scale or straight lines and I lost my mind on the way back up to the outhouse so I tried to draw a more clean version but still lost when I passed the outhouse

as you can see its narrow long space, so let me know what you think in the meantime I will try and find some graph paper and try these drawings again.

PS I tried to use http://www.smallblueprinter.com/garden/planner.html for drawing out the garden and it was a nightmare any apps or sites you recommend?

    Thanks, again
