I'm glad I'm not the only one with retractable hose issues.

Mine stopped retracting itself back into its green casing, after a year or so - bit like when the flex of a vacuum cleaner won't retract back in - so now I have to go through some theatricals to get hose back inside its box - involving lots of pulling it out, letting it wind in whilst I coax it in, plus a few expletives.

So sometimes, when I can't be a*sed, I leave it un retracted, in a big heap near the tap, out of protest. Then it protests back at me, by kinking everywhere...

Once I move, it's Gardena hose next time, I'm telling you!

    I love my expandable hose.
  • I have a number of hoses. I have the Hoselock wall mounted retractable hose - this is great. I had a number of expandable hoses, but would never get another one. As soon as they leaak they form large bubbles which pop in no time at all. Stepping on them is enough to render them useless. Three have been binned.
From my garden tap I tee off to run a permanent hose down to my greenhouse, it comes up into the greenhouse through the concrete, I have another which ends in a tap at the bottom of hte garden on a post. From here I can water anything easily.
It's the best thing I have done for my garden.

I say Fire, keep it clean on here old boy. We all love our ‘expandable hoses’ and get thorough use out of them before the inevitable years of leaking and kinks put it out to pasture. 👍

"I say Fire, keep it clean on here old boy".

    Neither old nor a boy.
  • Matty D there's nothing inevitable about it. If you treat them well and look after them they will reward you with many many years of good service.

What’s the trick to keeping your hose tidy then?

I got a hose and reel years ago.  I didn’t wall mount it, but it became a nightmare immediately, so glad I didn’t.

Never reeled up properly, and got worse over the years.  Kinks in every use, now leaking in at least three points.

The expandable hoses don't really get tangled and they reduce down to something you could easily put in a carrier bag.

Just make sure not to tread on it or bash it about.

I have a wall mounted hozelock reeled hose for the last 5 years.  The only problem I have with it is I've had to replace the hose head/gun this year as I forgot to take it off over the winter.  I need to unreel the whole hose to water the front garden, it reels back fine, no cracks/holes in hose.  I think hoses will always have one or two kinks especially if they are being dragged around the place.
