Squirrels stripping my Acer of Leaves

They've already chewed their way through 2/3rds of the leaves. Will it die?

    They certainly would in this garden,  don’t know about the tree, doesn’t sound good, seems they’ll just keep on at it if you don’t do something about it. 
    Nothing else constructive to say about the tree, but they do need leaves to survive. 
    Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
