Failed Hydragenea

HI All

I have a couple of new hydrengea plants and the flowers have fallen apart and lost their shape. I have tried watering and adding plant food. They are planted in well draining ericaeous compost. Help!

Am I right in thinking the stems are tied onto the wooden stakes? When I have bought hydrangea, they are often sold like that. I would carefully untie them - they will go floppy for a while but they should soon perk up. They might need more light too.

They look as if they have been forced into flower too soon. You are doing everything right with the planting though.

When the flowers die down and look papery then you can cut them back. The stems with no flowers this year will flower next year and you should have a nice plant.

Where I am they grow easily in the ground but as you can see from the photo, they are at least a month away from flowering.
