Suspicious hole in trunk of my silver birch

Please can anyone tell me what’s wrong with my tree and am I likely to lose it, I bought 4 and they have been in the ground for about a month, they are all doing really well even this one, the leaves have come out lovely and they all look strong, I have to admit it was there when I planted it.

Looks like a case of bacterial canker to me.  Advice here:
I'd contact the suppliers for a replacement/refund.  Send them that photo.

Thank you that’s great I will, is it something that will spread to the others? Sorry but new to this gardening lark

If it's a bacterial canker, it can spread via birds or insects.  Other cankers are caused by fungi - it might well be one of those - the damage is the same.  Those spread by spores in the air so can drift on the wind.  Either way, I'd replace and dispose of it (chop it up and put in with the land-fill refuse - don't compost or put in green waste bin.)
