Clear pond water

oh heck...I have a prob too...grey/milky water that smells disgusting but the snails and pond life don't seem too bothered. The oxygenating plants seem coated and unhappy. The pond is a half barrel unlined (as per suppliers instructions) and was previously a wine barrel. Could the wood be contaminated by the fermented wine even though I was careful to wash and clean as much as I thought was sufficient. I tried anti-weed control which seemed to work but could the dead weed be causing the stench?? I know that I am missing some crucial point but the only thing that I can think of is that the barrel should have been lined!

Should have mentioned that all the plants including a water lily are happy.

Hmm, problem with a half barrell is its not very much water so it doesn't take all that much to alter the balance drastically. It could be residue from the barrell, it could be the weed control. Id try and change as much of the water as possible, you might need to do it a few times over a few weeks to flush whatever it is out

Sorry, Stevo, I didn't see this. That doesn't sound good - 'milky' sounds particularly weird (not that I'm an expert). I think I would do what jellyfire says and try to change the water.

Hmmm. I think I might know what has caused the sudden clearing. There appear to be slugs in my pond. Is that possible? Definitely not snails. Several small slugs or slug-like creatures are on the stalks of the water lily and in various other places.

I am now cursing myself for buying a plant from the aquatics shop down the road. I got all my other plants either from my late Dad's pond (and washed them off completely before replanting) or online from a couple of suppliers recommended on here, but thought I'd shop local... Since planting it the water has mysteriously cleared (and it was literally overnight) and now I appear to have slugs. If they are as benign as pond snails then that's cool, but I have a feeling they might not be. Any advice?
